Tomorrow’s plein air event at the Governor’s Mansion with the Pastel Society of Mississippi…

I’ve packed my soft pastels in a little cigar box I’ve had for years.
The biggest challenge for me when painting plein air is not bringing my entire studio along. I tell myself every time: pack light, keep it simple.
That’s why I reach for the cigar box—it forces me to be intentional.
But if I’m being honest… I still sneak in a few extras. A handful of harder pastels, some pastel pencils—just in case. 😊

Belle is my official quality control manager—nothing goes in the bag without her inspection.

See, I’m adding a few extras. I will use these of course!

These may not seem like art supplies, but trust me—they’re essential for plein air painting. This bag holds Kleenex, hand sanitizer, a garbage bag, lip balm, Band-Aids… and I never forget sunscreen and bug spray.

for…a little MacGyvering.

It may not look like much, but this is me “packing light.” Everything I need is here, with my easel and paper already tucked inside the bag—ready to head out and see what the day brings.

…but it all fits.

And just like that, everything is packed and waiting. The bag by the door, my hat resting on top—ready for whatever tomorrow brings. It’s that quiet moment before it all begins that I love most… just showing up, paying attention, and letting the painting find its way.

On Thursday, I’ll share how it all turned out—whether we’re painting outside or improvising indoors with a little rain.
