Kay Meadows is a passionate and versatile creative professional with a flair for illustration, cartooning, and graphic design. Her artistic journey began at an early age and since then, she has been on a mission to bring ideas to life through visual storytelling.
Born and raised in Mississippi, her life took her out of Mississippi for many years, living in two other states and traveling to several countries. Experiencing new cultures, languages, and customs broadened her perspective and creativity.
While painting is her first love, she received a degree in Commercial Design and Advertising. She built a career as a graphic designer working in several industries, including ad departments of grocery stores and department stores, a missions organization, book publishing, a manufacturing company, and a print shop. Wonderfully, this has opened doors for her to do personal work, commissions, murals, and, more recently, illustrate children’s books, a life-long dream. Creating illustrations with whimsical characters/subjects with bold, bright colors to delight children. This encourages a child’s love of reading using fun artwork to help the child understand the story and expand comprehension to build vocabulary, learn about the world and understand complex concepts.
Books she has illustrated are Louisiana Animals ABC, Chili Time Y’all: How Texas Found It’s States Cuisine, It’s Hot in Louisiana, It’s Raining in Louisiana, King of the Shoe Box Parade, It’s Sunny in Florida and It’s Raining in Florida. She also creates surface pattern designs and illustrations to go on products in the home decor market.
When she is not illustrating children’s books or creating art for products, she paints en plein air and paints in studio from photographs of subjects that inspire her.
Over the years, she has won many awards starting in elementary school and as a professional artist, winning many awards for her art, and showing her art in galleries, including several one-man shows. Recently in 2023, she was awarded a second mini-grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission.
